Our Iowa dairy farm is seeking a reliable individual for the role of Full-time Livestock Feeder and Livestock Care. The ideal candidate will be experienced in operating farm equipment and have a passion for livestock care. This position involves feeding dairy and beef cattle, cleaning livestock pens, and assisting with general farm maintenance. The role requires the ability to follow precise feed rations using farm management software and perform basic equipment maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accurately mix and feed dairy and beef cattle 3 days a week and every other weekend.
  • Clean and maintain cow and heifer stalls (raking, scooping, sweeping, and bedding pens)
  • Operate tractors, skid steers, mixer wagons, and manure spreaders
  • Perform seasonal field crop work as needed
  • Haul manure and assist with concrete work and other farm projects
  • Maintain farm cleanliness, including weekly trash collection
  • Perform basic maintenance on farm equipment, including maintaining the water softener

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions
  • Basic computer skills for managing feed rations
  • Basic math skills for calculating feed mixtures
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. or more
  • Experience operating farm equipment (tractors, skid steers, etc.)
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions

Preferred Skills:

  • Prior experience in livestock care and feeding

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Artisan Cheese Assistant to join our team. This position plays a critical role in the packaging, aging, and quality assurance of our artisan cheeses. The ideal candidate will possess a keen eye for detail, a passion for craftsmanship, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Cheese Aging and Monitoring: Salt cheese in the cave, monitor cheese for defects, and ensure optimal aging conditions.
  • Flavoring and Packaging: Flavor and package cheese accurately using scales and other measuring tools.
  • Cleaning and Maintenance: Maintain the cleanliness of packaging and production rooms, adhering to strict hygiene standards.
  • Labeling and Inventory: Label cheese accurately, manage inventory, and ensure proper stock rotation.
  • Order Fulfillment: Receive cheese orders, prepare them for shipment, and coordinate with the sales team.
  • Bookkeeping: Assist with basic record-keeping and data entry related to cheese production and sales.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Familiarity with labeling software is a plus.
  • Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Commitment to cleanliness and food safety protocols.
  • Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Previous experience in food production or artisan cheese-making is a bonus but not required.

Work Environment:
This role involves working in a temperature-controlled environment, including cheese caves and packaging areas. Some lifting (up to 50 lbs) may be required.

About the Internship: We are a diverse farm operation seeking an enthusiastic intern eager to learn all aspects of farm management. This internship provides hands-on experience with dairy cows, beef cows, agronomy, and robotic milking technology. Interns will work under the guidance of the Dairy Herdsman, Beef Herdsman, and Agronomist, ensuring a well-rounded learning experience in animal husbandry, sustainable farming practices, and crop production.

Key Responsibilities:

Dairy Cow Management:

  • Ensure cow comfort and hygiene, including bedding care.
  • Assist with heat detection for breeding cycles.
  • Oversee safety in crossovers for cow movement.
  • Perform maintenance on manure management equipment (lubrication and repairs).

Robotic Milker Operation:

  • Maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of robotic milking systems.
  • Conduct daily maintenance of robotic milkers.
  • Care for filter systems and monitor the tank room for cleanliness and proper function.
  • Assist with robotic feed supplement delivery for the dairy herd.

Dairy Heifer & Calf Care:

  • Provide care for baby calves, including feeding, nutrition, and maintaining a clean environment (pens and air quality).
  • Support young heifer management, including vaccinations, feeding, and nutrition.
  • Assist with heat detection in heifers.

Dry Cow Care:

  • Monitor and maintain maternity pens for dry cows.
  • Assist with feed delivery and care.

Beef Cattle Management:

  • Maintain and clean feed bunks, especially before and after inclement weather.
  • Follow newborn calf protocols and administer vaccinations.
  • Assist with creep feeding of beef calves.
  • Monitor body conditioning and manage paddock care and bedding.
  • Support breeding protocols and heat detection.

Agronomy & Crop Production:

  • Assist with soil sampling and seed treatment application.
  • Monitor plant populations and field conditions for weed pressure and disease.
  • Help with yield monitoring and crop evaluations.

General Farm Duties:

  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.
  • Ensure consistent observation and adherence to safety policies and procedures.
  • Prioritize work-related tasks effectively to meet schedules and deadlines.

Supervision:

  • The intern will work under the guidance of the Dairy Herdsman, Beef Herdsman, and Agronomist, learning best practices and gaining insight into the management of different farm operations.
